Demographic Data & Gratification Model

Demographic Data
Demographic data is hard detail, it is a systematical way of stereotyping people using things like age, gender, race and economic class to create the target consumer population for a product.

Example Questions that may be asked:
- gender male/ female
- age 6-11, 12-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-34, 35+
- occupation, students, school age, proffesional (being to uni eg teacher, nurse. something that requires a degree) skilled (plumber, electritian, construction worker etc), manual (cleaner, factory etc), unemployed.
- income, £0 - £10,000 , £10,000-£15,000, £15,000 - £20,000, £20,000- £25,000 and £30,000 +

When thinking about creating a magazine age is very important. If you are aiming it at a younger audience, you need to use less complex language and usually there are more pictures than text as it appeals to them more. If it had complex language the audience may not understand and therefore will no longer buy the magazine. Often magazines will use slang language or words that may suit that age. However when aimed at an older audience they will use more sophistcated language. In magazines aimed at older people there is generally a lot more information/ text than images. The images are usually more formal and grown up compared to a younger audience where the images will include people messing around and having fun.

Another important thing to consider when making a magazine is the gender of the target audience. In a female magazine it is more likely to talk about other things such as shopping, gossip and male advice. This appeals to a female audience more and due to this being what a stereotypical woman is in to when reading a magazine. When thinking about colour schemes it will more likely to be pinks and purples and quite light colours also depending on the age as well.  However when advertising to a male audience it is completely different as it will include things such as cars, women and football which stereotypically males are into. The colour scheme will also be a lot more masculine including blacks, blue and greens which are quite dark colours.

Economic class is also important when choosing the target audience for your magazine. If you are aiming for an upper middle class audience the presentation of the magazine will be a lot more organised and professionally done like a buisness magazine compared to something that may be aimed towards a lower class which may be a bit more messy and fun. It also depends on how much they earn. The upper classes are more likely to buy a magzine that is £4 that suits them as an audience where as a lower class person is more likely to buy a magazine for £1.99 as it is cheaper and they may enjoy that kind of magazine as it is more aimed at them.

Psychographic Information
Psychographics is the study of  opinons, personality, attitudes and interests. Pyschographic factors are also called IAO variables. It can often be confused with demographic data. When used in the field of marketing it can be valuable for studies of indivuals or groups of people. The types of questions that you may ask when asking for psychographic information are:
- name your favrioute artist (Could provide a list)
- how do you consume music? ( do you listen to the radio, buy cds, subscribe to an online providence, eg spotify, itunes, download tracks illegally, see a live band,)
-what are your favrioute brands? (converse, superdry, apple, etg) rank
- how often do you read about music online? (once a week, once a month, everyday, never)
-how much would you pay for a weekly, monthly magazine? £1-£2, £2-£3, £3-£4
These questions are a lot more personal to the audience and depending on the person can vary a lot. This is helpful to know because then you can find out about different types of people and how you can market your product to fit them.

Gratification Model
The gratification theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. UGT is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication. It is a theory developed by Blulmer and Katz.
This diagram was created by Maslow. This diagram states the foundations to the peak of our being, at the bottom is the most important with breathing, food and water etc. At the top is self actualization including things such as morality and creativity. This model relates to human beings and their needs and not media. Below is a gratification model realted to media.

This shows the different people and why people use media, there are a range of different researchers who all suggested different reasons for media use.

My Target Audience- Existing Reader Profiles

Existing reader profiles
First Reader Profile= We Love Pop
This reader profile shows that the magazine is a monthly magazine which is mainly aimed at a female audience. This is portrayed through he use of colour used on the magazine. The target age for this magazine is the ages 13-15. This means that because they are aiming it at a younger audience they need to make the content that they place in the magazine suitable for that audience. The magazine as a whole is not just aimed at music it also has other parts to it to make it appeal more to the audience that they are aiming for. They have done this by adding fashion, celebrities and gossip into the magazine as well. This gets more people reading the magazine and buying it. Because it is such a popular magazine it costs a lot to advertise in the magazine, the kind of people that would buy a page to advertise on would be company's that know that their product would fit the age range that the magazine is aimed at. For example advertising an Xbox in this kind of magazine would not be appropriate where as advertising shoes or clothing company's would be more age appropriate. The price of the magazine is £2.99 compared to other magazine they can be around £1.99 or £2.50. The magazine is expensive because they add in extra gifts and discounts within the magazine. This gets more people to buy the magazine and it offers the audience something that another magazine may not have. This causes the price to go up so then the can afford to add in all these extra gifts and offers to the magazine for their readers.

Second Reader Profile - Q

This reader profile shpws that most of its audience/ readers are the male population however even though it is mainly aimed towards males 30% of their readers are female. This shows that girls can be into this kind of magazine no matter what the target audience is aiming for. Due to the magazine being aimed at an older audience it has a more mature feel to it and looks more professional as the layout is more consistant and runs throughout the magazine. As well as it being a popular magazine to buy in the shops it is also very popular online. These may be readers that love the magazine and choose to follow it online in order to keep up to date with all the lastest gossip and find out what is going on with the magazine. Because the magazine is very popular it costs other companies a lot to advertise in it. The reader profile shows how much a page would cost them to print.

LIIAR Analysis

 Front Cover
Language
The pop group one direction are staring directly at the camera/ us as a viewer, this makes it seem as if they are looking directly at the person who wants to read all about them and gets their attention. It makes them seem friendly and open. We are invited into their life and lean all about them in this "fan girl special". This is implying that the magazine is aimed towards the one direction fans. The image is a group shot of all the boys which was taken from a long shot point of view. The image is actually quite an old image of the boys as their looks have changed recently. I think that they have purposely done this in order to show the viewers the younger version to appeal to the younger audience. There are also other pictures on the front of this magazine cover to show the smaller features within this magazine. They are put alongside text that would suit the audience that it is aiming for. The overall front cover is dominated by bright colourful text with 10 images. These images are all pop artists or famous celebrities who are linked to the pop genre. The whole of the front cover is bombarded with colour, images and text. This is so that it stands out against all the other magazines in the category that it is aimed for. They want people to buy their magazine instead of another one
The Content Page
Language
The contents page is the first thing that a viewer sees as well as an advert on the other page. The theme is consistent, the massive splash of colour and images runs throughout. On the contents page it has a picture of the front cover with numbers surrounds the edges. This suggests that you can find what was on the front cover on these pages of the magazine. Each picture that is shown on this magazine page, everyone looks happy and is always looking directly at the camera which makes them look like they are looking directly at you as a person inviting you in to find out what is on that page. Because the magazine is aimed at a younger audience the people that are featured always tend to be quite young as well because they appeal better to that audience as a whole. The camera position changes  depending on which image is being used, some of the images are close ups  where as the bigger images tend to be medium close up, they have being used to add colour as well as take up space on the page to make it look more interesting to the audience. For a pop magazine it suits the audience that it is trying to attract. It includes a range of stories that would interest their target audience for example on page 4 "Radio 1's Gossip plus 100% 1D and 5SOS Goss" they have used the use of bold text to make parts of the sentence stand out better so that the reader knows exactly what is on that page. The bold text makes the readers eye draw straight to that rather than the text which doesn't stand out so much against the page.

Double Page Spread
Language
The double page spread is very simple however it is good for the target audience that it is aimed at, there is not much text so it doesn't overwhelm the page with writing. The writing on the pages is well spaced out this means that it won't bore the reader if they can read it in small sections compared to massive blocks. For the image on the double page spread it is a long shot of the same group that is on the front cover however this is a more recent photo compared to the one used on the front cover. I think that they have done this to show what they looked like before and what they look like now. Because this is a "fan girl" edition it includes all the text about their journey as pop stars. Each box includes a date of something that happened for them. This is good to have in a fan girl edition because it means that the audience can find out more about them as people as well as their music career. In total there are 4 images of the boys on the double page spread this varies the amount of pictures that have being used for this magazine. It takes up space in the magazine as well as creating imagery for the reader to look at. At the bottom of the second page is information about when their next album will be released and their website. This is promoting the pop group to get people to go and look at their website as well as reading about them in their magazine. The colour scheme is still consistent and runs throughout the magazine. The use of pink shows that it is a magazine primarily aimed at a female audience.
Institution
The group who produced this magazine was the BBC. The BBC is very popular and covers a wide range of media. For example they have a range of TV channels. Radio, magazine and much more. It is well known for its logo which is shown on the front cover of the magazine in the top left hand corner.
Ideology
The message that this magazine gives across to the audience is that it is fun and up to date with the latest pop music. It mainly focuses on very popular artists that are usually in the charts that the magazine is being produced. They want to keep people reading their magazine by giving them things to read about that would interest them as an audience. They have articles and other information that is age appropriate to the audience that they are aiming to produce the magazine. They include a lot of posters in order to get more people to buy the magzine, this way they will not only sell the magazine but people are more likely to read it if it has an artist that they love featured in the magazine. Most of the magazine is about gossip more than actual music itself. There is very limited information about music it is mainly about the artists personally and their life rather than what they produce.
Audience
This is the front cover of a pop magazine aimed at young girls from the ages 6-12. I know this from the colours and artists featured on the magazine. They have used words in the banner at the top of the magazine that would appeal to a girl audience such as "gossip", "shopping" & "boys" these individual words would be something that a young girl would want to read about. The magazine fits the target audience because of what is featured on the magazine including images and smaller features. It is a very niche audience as it is aimed at just younger girls. you would not find boys or older teenagers/ women reading this magazine.
Representation
Due to the audience being mostly female it has a very femine colour tone to the magazine. This includes colours such as pinks and light blues. This colour scheme runs throughout the magazine which makes it consistant and professional. The artists that have being chosen for this magazine are specifically being chosen because they appeal most to that audience that they are aiming for. For example they have used One Direction also known as "1D" in the magazine because young/ teenage girls may have "Crushes" on the group. This means that they will be wanting to read about them due to wanting to know everything about them. They can create this false imagaination of being one of them, young and popular. The magazine portrays them as being young, hot and fun. People are jealour of them and want to be them. This makes the magazine look like it knows its audience and who they are aiming the magazine towards.

Existing Pop Magazines

My Music Magazine Genre Pop

I have chosen the music genre of pop because pop can cover a wide range of artists. It is also a very popular and well known catorgary. There are many pop magazines that already exist which can give me inspiration for my own magazine. It will give me pose ideas and what kind of clothing is accociated with the genre pop. There are many sub genres to pop for example pop rock, indi pop etc. I find that because there is such a range that it can appeal to a wide audience depending on what kind of pop that they are in to.
Pop History
Pop music is a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of popular. Pop music is a genre of popular music which originated what we know today in the modern form in the 1950’s in America. Pop music is just music that is popular it can be of any style, there are lots of sub genres to pop music for example hip pop, rock pop, indie pop etc. Pop music is usually very electric and it often borrows elements from other styles of music. The typical structure to a pop song is often verse to chorus structure, this means that the chorus is constantly being repeated throughout the song, it has melodic tunes which are very catchy and tend to stick in a person’s head. Pure pop is described as a mixture of hard rock and melodic pop music, it tends to be more aggressive than pop-rock. It usually includes instruments such as electric guitars, bass, drums etc.

Taylor Swift - Shake It Off
This is an example of a country artist who changed to the genre pop because of the music market and who she was aiming her music at. This video alone has 190,199,885 views.

Meghan Trainor- All About That Bass
This is another example of a pop artist. This is a song that is 1st in the top 40 (see below) and is very popular in the pop catorgary.  This view has 169,913,887 views. There is a decrease in views between Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor because Taylor Swift has being an artist for longer and has developed a bigger fan base as she has released many albums.

The stars on the top 40 show the songs that are pop. There are exactly half pop songs in the top 40, this shows that the pop genre is very popular. This includes pop as a whole including sub category's like electro-pop and rock pop.
